Module 1 — Introduction to African Dance & Culture

Understanding the Roots and Meaning of Movement

  • History of African dance traditions 
  • Dance as storytelling and communication 
  • Introduction to African rhythms and musical instruments 
  • Cultural significance of movement and expression 
  • Basic posture, balance, and coordination 

Activities:

  • Icebreaker rhythm exercises 
  • Introduction to basic steps 
  • Drum and beat recognition 

Learning Outcome:
Participants will understand the cultural foundation of African dance and develop confidence with basic movements and rhythm.


Module 2 — Rhythm, Timing & Body Movement

Connecting the Body to the Beat

  • Understanding tempo and rhythm patterns 
  • Footwork fundamentals 
  • Hip, shoulder, and torso isolation techniques 
  • Coordination and body control 
  • Warm-up and stretching techniques 

Activities:

  • Call-and-response movement drills

  • Basic choreography practice 

Learning Outcome:
Participants will improve timing, coordination, and rhythmic movement while building physical confidence.


Module 3 — Traditional African Dance Styles

Exploring Regional Dance Expressions

  • West African dance styles 
  • Traditional ceremonial dances 
  • Celebration and social dances 
  • Meaning behind costumes, drums, and gestures 
  • Dance etiquette and performance expression 

Activities:

  • Learning short traditional dance routines

Participants will gain appreciation for diverse African dance traditions and learn foundational traditional routines.


Module 4 — Fitness, Expression & Performance

Building Strength Through Dance

  • African dance for fitness and wellness 
  • Endurance, flexibility, and stamina 
  • Facial expression and stage presence 
  • Energy, confidence, and audience engagement 
  • Creative movement and improvisation 

Activities:

  • High-energy dance workouts 
  • Mirror and freestyle exercises 
  • Performance confidence drills

Participants will develop stronger performance skills, physical endurance, and expressive movement techniques.


Module 5 — Choreography & Team Dance

Moving Together in Unity

Module 6 — Final Showcase & Cultural Celebration
